Limbo land

Thank you for bearing with me over the last month of sporadic blogging (apart from the Two Lost Followers. Oh dear. *waves*). I now have a computer that doesn’t crash, although I fear the bad old computer has led me into nasty habits, such as:

  • Turning computer on and wandering off to do something else while it slowly rumbles into life
  • Watching computer freeze on the Internet/Word/Everything and wandering off to do something else
  • Looking at computer, sighing, and wandering off to do something else

You can see there’s a pattern emerging here and it’s not congruent with writing (straight onto the computer, at any rate). It also doesn’t help that I’m living in the land of limbo.

For various reasons, this and that, la-la-la, limbo land has been a nice place for me to be. Och (she says, reverting inexplicitly to Scottish), it’s hard to explain. I’d have to sit you down with a glass of wine and flail my hands for a while. But the easiest explanation is that nothing changes (very much) in limbo land and there can be times in life when this feels attractive. The sun rises; the rain falls. The train is early; the train is late. You go to work; you come home. It is a place to regroup energy, a safe haven, a retreat. But stay too long and that energy will sap, the haven will suffocate and the retreat will pull up its mossy time-heavy drawbridge and dim the exit signs.

I need to get out of limbo land. It’s time for bold decisions – decisions about where to live, what to do. Ever read those Choose Your Own Adventure books? The ones where page 16 leads to happy-ever-after and page 20 leads to being eaten by a Minotaur? That is exactly what I need to do. (But not the Minotaur bit. I’m done with Minotaurs.) I need to start choosing my own adventure again.

Your limbo land sounds nice , kind of like the island of Lotus Eaters, only with more meaningful activity. Wishing you luck on your adventures!

Perfect description. Limbo land is SAFE until it sucks the life completely out of you. Good luck with jumpstarting! I hope the chances you take lead you where you want to go!

Here's hoping you find the right path, minotaur free and with no trolls hiding precariously under the bridges.

Good luck hiking out of limbo land. It can be a tough journey, but it sounds as though you're up for the challenge!

Good luck escaping ole limbo land! I thought I was the only one who called it that. Course my limbo land is the place where unsolicited manuscripts, queries, and short stories end (and are seldom heard from again) at least not promptly. Ah, such is the business.

& 2 always happens to me, no matter what PC/laptop/iphone/tech gadget I'm using. Even my voice memo program lags and off I go... LOL!

Lol! This made me laugh because only 2 months ago. I was in the same position. Turning on the pc, wandering about, click on logon...getting a cup of tea...launch Internet, having a look at what's on t.v. 2 hours later. Going upstairs.
To turn off the pc. ;-)

It's so difficult to follow your artistic dreams/personal goals (whatever they are) when you are holding down a full time job as well. Ultimately though I think most people know when it's time to push on with their goals and it sounds like you are at that point.

Feel free not to take my advice, but what I've found works for me is to make time to go for what I want to, relax when I need to and to try not to beat myself up when I'm being 'selfish'.

I think you and I would get on very well if we got to meet in 'real life'. Very best of luck with your adventures. x

I leave my computer and return often through the day. It beckons me to turn it first thing in the morning.I wondered where you have been.

Och, lass!

I hear you about limbo land. It can be nice, but only for so long.

Let us hope the muse returns and the computer co-operates. At least you will not be suffering from the typist's bane, Repetitive Strain Injury at present.

Think of your recent limbo as resting up for the next adventure. You actually sound ready to go. When limbo gets tiresome instead of restful, that means it's time.

Oh My! I loved the choose your own adventure books. I used to read them to my class and then they would vote on what we should do at the questioning points. When we came to a final end they would want to reread it and try and make the opposite choices.

I've been in limbo land too. I'm going to be brave and put myself/work out there, as soon as I get over this nasty respitory infection...

Good luck with your adventure too!

I'm in need of adventure too. Limbo is so like... well limbo.
Wondering what to do with my day off, I thought, 'a trip to the seaside!' Then looked out at the rain, made a cup of tea and went back to bed. I'm still stuck, darn it!!

Best of luck with your adventures!

Your plight reminds me of the old days of the dawn of the internet, when one always expected it to be slow, no matter what. I always had a book in one hand and my other hand on the mouse, waiting for pages to load...
