Holiday Haircuts

One amusing thing about going back to work after the festive season is the amount of holiday haircuts you see on the train. Newly-washed, straightened, dyed, glossy, held in place by new shiny clips – these are haircuts that mean business, that swish in the face of New Year and say to the world ‘I am Groomed – Bring It On!’.

Sadly after a few days detangling the horrors of the Christmas Email Inbox they will have disintegrated into the Need-a-wash, frizzed, odd-grey-bits, dank, held in place by clip-regurgitated-by-cat. But while they are here let’s celebrate them!

You may have guessed, but as I was doing my best sardine in a scarf impression on the train this morning, I was thinking of ways to be positive. Look at the haircuts, I thought to myself. My, isn’t that man’s beard clipped nicely. I also played ‘Spot the Christmas Present’ with handbags, scarves, gloves, and, in a shock new entry for this year, Kindles and e-readers. Yes, a few were showing their shiny selves on the train, with their owners tapping them and then looking suspiciously over their shoulders in case of lurking Kindle Kidnappers.

I don’t really make resolutions. I like to make Vague Thoughts instead. So far the vague thoughts have swirled around big things such as ‘find place to live’ and ‘find home for book’ to ‘a bit of fitness’ and ‘must eat lettuce’. But I feel sort of sparky about 2011, and not just because I realised that if I turn my silver scarf around then it looks like a super hero cape.

Folk in my office LOVE me. You can tell.

Ps: Thank you so much for your kind words on my last post, about my Aunt Shirley. I was so touched by your comments - they all mean a lot to me. x

'Sardine in a scarf' - I love that! I was amazed when a man stood up and gave me his seat on the tube on Saturday. It can't have been because of my hairdo......

Happy New Year!

Whilst your Vague Thoughts are all commendable, I would knock 'must eat lettuce' on the head immediately. Lettuce is the devil's food and should be avoided at all costs. It ruins sandwiches and salads and puts a pall over everything it touches. If God had meant us to eat lettuce our appendix would be 27 times bigger. But it isn't.

Make 2011 lettuce free!

Ha! I love your vague thoughts...I have vague thoughts too.

Spot the Christmas present is one of my favorite pastimes as well, though I don't have a train to do it in.

Don't listen to music obsessive--knocking lettuce on the head (ha-ha- get it? Get it? Lettuce... head... Oh, never mind.)--is wrong. Lettuce is our friend. It is crunchy and juicy, but should only be eaten fresh and crisp, not soggy and squidgy. Do you want to be a sardine in a scarf all your life, or do you want to grow up to be a barracuda in a poncho? Well, eat more lettuce!

Super heroine Jayne sounds lovely. Hope you had a great holiday. And hope you find both a new home for yourself and a home for your book.

I guess I will call mine slight indifferences. Nothing changes in my life very fast. I did put my ice skates on to boost my exercise routine.I thought abot putting my stationary bike where I took a chair out to put up a Christmas tre, but just thought so far.My thoughts are to at least try anything you haven't done.Life is to short not to.

What train do you catch?!?! All I had were people buried deep in their Metro! LOL!!!

I do the ever handy - look at shoes and guess their sizes.

Happy New Year!! Take care

I can completely relate to this post. My hair never looks as nice as everyone elses after the Christmas holidays for some reason. I do love playing spot the Christmas present and I have vague thoughts all of the time. :-)

I love your vague thoughts and your 'sardine in a scarf' sounds intriguing, maybe you'll set a trend!
I ate some lettuce taday and would advise against it, the expression it causes on one's face is not pretty to look at.

I'm afraid my hair is not newly cut, dyed and tamed for the New Year, I still look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards :-(

I'm SO glad I have found your blog! It is very cheering, and makes me feel normal and human. :)

*giggles* I love how your attempt to be positive spirals a little. Very amusing. As for me... yeah... I think I touched up the color (I add some red in winter since the summer blonde ends up getting lines when the sun is gone)... and I'm sure the gray is already peeking through.

I always play spot the Christmas present...
I've already noticed a whole new group of cell phone recipients this year. Little brats trying to look cool walking down the street, talking much too loud on their new gadgets...

I like "sardine in a scarf" and "vague thoughts" too. I actually did make some resolutions, that I called "goals", but they also tend toward the vague, as in: "exercise more" (easy to do when I haven't been exercising at all); "drink less coffee", as in omitting one cup a week. :-) Good luck with your new homes for self and manuscript.

Lol, I am going to play 'spot the present' when I next go to London for work! I too make 'Vague Thoughts'. After reading this post I realise that my life is lacking my very own sparkly scarf / super hero cape though!

Vague thoughts are the best...or even better totally random/without cause thoughts. I enjoyed your funny post!
